Head Coach Tom Collins

Tom Collins, the inaugural head baseball coach at Stony Point High School, has just completed his ninth season in that position. Stony Point is the sixth coaching stop on Collins’ list. Round Rock Westwood, Austin Lanier, Tyler John Tyler, Georgetown, and Orangefield are the previous high schools at which Coach Collins served. Add to that list of high schools Southwestern University and Baylor University where Coach Collins spent one year each student coaching. Stony Point is the third head coaching position Collins has held.
Professional highlights for Coach Collins would have to include being named Co-Coach of the year on the 1990 All-Greater Houston team after leading his state semi-finalist Orangefield Bobcat team to a 23-6 record. At Orangefield, Collins coached the player who currently holds the longest ever consecutive game hitting streak in Texas high school baseball history (Jeff Granger, Texas A&M). At John Tyler, Collins’ team earned a spot in the national high school record book by turning five double plays in a game (vs. Tyler Lee). Collins also worked as an assistant football coach at John Tyler in 1994 when the Lions won the class 5A-Div II state championship with a perfect 16-0 record.
As a player, Collins was a three-year letterman for Houston Sharpstown High School, where he played third base and left field. He was a member of Sharpstown’s 1982 class 5A state championship team. Coach Collins earned all-district honors his junior and senior seasons and was named to the all-greater Houston team his senior season in high school. In college, Collins played for Coach Jim Mallon’s Southwestern University Pirates from 1984-1987. The 1984 Southwestern team finished third in the N.A.I.A. World Series. In each of his four years in college, Coach Collins earned the S.U. athletic/academic award for maintaining a GPA above 3.0 during semesters while playing baseball.
Coach Collins has been a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students, Who’s Who Among Colleges and Universities, and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He was also mentioned as one of the National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers for the 2005/2006 school year. Collins has served as a math teacher for the duration of his teaching career. He is active in the Austin Area Baseball Coaches Association and currently serves as the Public Relations Officer / UIL Representative for the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.
